The Tony-award winning comedy, Art, by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, revolves around three friends - Serge, Marc and Yvan - who find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when Serge buys an expensive painting. The canvas is white, with a few white lines. Marc is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes "art". Yvan, caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and mollify both of them. Serge is proud of his extravagant purchase and fully expects the approval of his friends. Lines are drawn and they square off over the canvas, using it as an excuse to relentlessly batter one another over various failures. As their arguments become less theoretical and more personal, they border on destroying their friendship.
Hal Williams (Guess Who, Roots: The Next Generations, Private Benjamin, 227, Sanford and Son) stars as Marc in this witty, intelligent and often funny play that explores the power of art to engage the imagination and strengthen the enduring bonds of friendship. Williams' co-stars include Mark Thomsen (Chesapeake, The Time of Your Life, Roberto Zucco, The Devils) as Yvan, and Terry Donovan Smith (Hunter, Jake and the Fat Man, Cujo, General Hospital) as Serge.
The play is directed by Tom Provenzano, a Professor of Theatre Arts at Cal State San Bernardino. The Indian Wells Theater is located on the Palm Desert Campus of Cal State San Bernardino; 37-500 Cook Street, between Gerald Ford and Frank Sinatra Drives.
