Tocqueville Society

ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY

The name Tocqueville Society was chosen by the United Way in 1984 because of Frenchman Alexis de Tocqueville’s admiration in the 1830s for the spirit of North Americans who understand that advancing the common good means creating opportunities for a better life for all. In 1831, de Tocqueville, a French political thinker and historian (1805–1859), traveled throughout America, recording his observations of life in the young nation. He recognized, applauded and immortalized American voluntary action on behalf of the common good.  “Americans make a great deal of real sacrifices to the public welfare; and I have noticed a hundred instances in which they hardly ever failed to lead a faithful support to one another…America has a long and rich tradition of generosity that began with simple acts of neighbor helping neighbor.”

The hallmark of a Tocqueville Society member is a passionate commitment to making a positive impact in our community. Setting the standard for charitable giving, Tocqueville Society members are at the forefront of improving lives through extraordinary financial gifts, volunteerism and advocacy, all while enjoying the benefits of networking with the most influential philanthropic, community, and business leaders in the Coachella Valley. Here, our elite group of local philanthropists is an alliance of successful, community-minded individuals and business leaders who invest $10,000 or more annually. We are grateful to our members who show their passion by contributing time, talent and financial resources to help us break the cycle of poverty in the Coachella Valley through our investments in programs focusing on education, health and financial stability. It is important to note that any dollars raised in the Coachella Valley stay in the Coachella Valley!
